Deep and extended deep ROSAT surveys.
Abstract
Early results from soft X-ray surveys reaching extremely faint fluxes are presented. The 300 faint X-ray sources detected are expected to be mostly QSOs (up to redshifts of z ≈ 4) and Seyfert galaxies, although normal galaxies and groups of galaxies are also present. These surveys resolve ≈50% of the soft X-ray background. X-ray source counts have been measured directly, and continued to fainter fluxes via a fluctuation analysis of the remaining background. Comparison with predictions from current models of QSO X-ray evolution show that QSOs may continue to be the dominant X-ray population at the faintest fluxes so far examined.
